Eye Health Gives Us Insight into Overall Wellness

You’ve likely heard the saying, “The eyes are the windows to the soul,” but what’s really special about your eyes is how they’re windows into your overall health.

Common and uncommon health concerns can show early signs inside your eye, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. Many of our tests are noninvasive, so we can examine blood vessels and nerve tissue without touching your eye.

How Often Do You Need an Eye Exam?

The Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists suggests that adults (20–64) should have a comprehensive eye exam at least every 2 years, while seniors (65+) should have one annually.

However, how often you need an eye checkup or prescription update depends on your needs. If you wear contact lenses, have eye conditions, or experience significant health changes, we may recommend evaluating your eyes more frequently.

What to Expect at Your Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam generally includes a variety of tests to assess your eyesight and overall eye health. If you’re a new patient, we’ll ask questions to learn about your health and lifestyle.

At every routine visit, we use digital retinal photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get a detailed look at your eyes.

The cost of digital imaging and pupil dilation is included in your exam fee. If your exam is covered by a government program like OHIP, the cost of digital retinal images may not be included, but we can add them for a small fee.

Dilated Retinal Exam

During your exam, we may use eye drops to perform a dilated retinal exam to see the inside structures of your eye more easily.

Detailed evaluations of the inner back of the eye help us detect changes or abnormalities that can indicate early signs of eye diseases or conditions, sometimes even before they affect your eyesight.

Retinal Imaging

The retina, located at the back of the eye, detects light and converts it into information for the brain to create 3D images. Detailed imaging of the back of the eye allows us to assess the health of retinal tissue and detect early signs of disease.

Our clinic offers 2 retinal imaging technologies: traditional retinal photography and Clarus wide-field imaging.

Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive test that can capture detailed images of the back of the eye. It’s like an ultrasound for your eyes but uses light waves instead of sound to map tissue layers.

These detailed, layered images help us assess your eye tissue, blood vessels, and nerves so we can identify any changes that might indicate eye disease or vision loss.
